How to Get ThereCar:

From Melbourne, take the Western Highway until you see a sign reading 'Ararat 10km'. Shortly after this you will cross the Hopkins River Bridge and then drive up an incline. At the top of the incline there is a turning lane to turn right into Warrayatkin Road, which is signposted 'Prison'.

Note that Warrayatkin Road is a dirt road with a 100km per hour limit. Care should be taken because the surface can be quite loose. Follow this road for approximately 3km and then turn left at Warrak Road (this intersection is sealed). Follow Warrak Road for about 800m and the prison gate is on the left. Access to the prison and visitor car park is through Gate 3.

From Ararat Railway Station, turn left onto Western Highway. After approximately 500m, turn left into Albert Street. Take the fourth exit through the roundabout onto Grano Street. Travel along Grano Street for approximately 4km. The prison is located on the right. Enter through Gate 3.

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE TO CAR PARKING: Visitor car parking can be accessed via Gate 3 which is clearly sign posted. Past visitors to Hopkins Correctional Centre will notice that this has changed due to the expansion of the prison.

Public transport:

Take the Melbourne to Ararat train from Southern Cross Station. Sometimes this train service changes to a coach at Ballarat, then continues onto Ararat. The Saturday 8:08 train and Sunday 08:28 train connect with a bus service to Hopkins Correctional Centre. Always confirm timetables with V/Line before you travel.
